Island and Spice magazine announces, ‘In Honor of Rum,’ a virtual event bringing together leading experts in the rum world to discuss the art of making Caribbean rum and the unique contributions various islands bring to the cultivation and distillation processes. The live event is free to attend.

The panelists include Trudiann Branker, master blender at Mount Gay in Barbados – home to the world's oldest running rum distillery; Audrey Bruisson, global marketing for Rhum Clément in Martinique; Christelle Harris, director of marketing for Hampden Estate in Jamaica; and Cybille St. Aude, a Haitian American chef and author, who will speak about Clairin.

In Honor of Rum’ will be moderated by Jahde Marley, a wine and spirits consultant who was named a Rising Black Voice in Wine by Wine & Spirits Magazine in 2020.

(See how Ms. Marley puts her spin on traditional Caribbean cocktails).

The event appeals to the rum nerd who wants to know how distilleries use native terroir ingredients to define flavors and also to the general drink enthusiast who is interested in learning more about rums.

EMILY GALLARDO FOR ISLAND AND SPICE MAGAZINE

EMILY GALLARDO FOR ISLAND AND SPICE MAGAZINE

Island and Spice Magazine follows the release of "Where Do I Belong? The Pastelitos Keep Calling Me Home,” the second essay of its Strained series, with a live discussion between Jonathan Custodio, the essayist, and Dr. Ramona Hernández, the director of the Dominican Studies Institute at City College of New York who co-edited the essay.

In the piece, Mr. Custodio writes about having to leave behind his Dominican neighborhood in the Bronx for a job in Washington, D.C. The relocation pushes him to question whether his dreams are worth the sacrifice of leaving his Dominican food, culture and community behind.

Dr. Hernández, whose research includes Dominican migrations, will speak about the challenges culturally-rich neighborhoods face as second-generation Americans reach adulthood and leave.

Island and Spice Magazine marks the debut of its new series, Strained, with a live conversation with Paula Madison whose contributing essay, “Chopsticks, Forks and Knives. The Inequality at My Dinner Table” has already been recognized in The New York Times for its “terrific” writing.

In the essay, Ms. Madison writes about growing up as a Black, Chinese and Jamaican American in Harlem during the 1960s and how she navigated racism with flatware and her fists at the young age of 10.

The discussion will be led by Rochelle Oliver, a former New York Times editor who founded Island and Spice Magazine in 2018.
